2013 - Daniel Gutman, University of Nebraska, College of Law

The Bennett G. Hornstein Memorial Scholarship for aspiring or current law students was awarded to Daniel Gutman for the 2013-2014 school year. From Omaha, Gutman graduated from American University, majoring in Political Science; he also spent a semester at the University of Ghana in Legon, Ghana. He enters the University of Nebraska College of Law in August 2013.

After graduating, Gutman worked on President Obama’s campaign as a field organizer. He then went to work for the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama, first as Juvenile Justice Policy Specialist and then as Community and Youth Advocate. While there, he conducted research on juvenile justice policy, organized community events and “know your rights” sessions, and investigated claims of harassment and bullying.

For the next two years, Gutman worked as State Strategist for the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth in Washington, DC. He provided technical assistance and strategic guidance to lawyers, advocates, and families of incarcerated youth in various states to advance legislative reforms that promote fair, age-appropriate sentences for youth in the adult criminal justice system.

After graduating from law school, Gutman plans to work within the community to challenge policies and practices that push Nebraska’s children into the juvenile and criminal justice systems.
